Annual CAA Member Meeting to be Held on March 2nd, 2012

The CAA will be holding an annual member and Board meeting on March 2nd, 2012 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting. Please RSVP here.

We would also like to thank all who have renewed their 2012 CAA memberships. Your membership with us is greatly appreciated and we look forward to a bright and prosperous 2012! Also, as we are always looking for ways to improve and grow the Organization, please submit to us any recommendations regarding potential new members.

Join the CAA at Aquaculture America 2012 in Las Vegas!

Please join us at Aquaculture America 2012 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, February 29th through March 2nd. The Aquaculture America Conference, hosted by the U.S. Aquaculture Society (formerly the U.S. chapter of WAS) in conjunction with NAA and the U.S. Aquaculture Suppliers Association, is the only major national aquaculture conference and exposition held in the United States.

From the event brochure, “Aquaculture America 2012 will have the largest aquaculture trade show in the Western Hemisphere and one of the largest anywhere in the world with nearly 200 booths! It is the place to visit current suppliers and make new contacts. To keep ahead and to keep profits building, you need to keep pace with the technological advancements in the industry – and Aquaculture America 2012 is the place to do it!”

Tour Descriptions:

1. USFWS Razorback Facility at Lake Mead and Hoover Dam Expedition

Description:

A luxury coach will pick you up at the Paris Hotel at 9:00 and drive you to Lake Mead where we will tour the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) restoration hatchery. The USFWS will provide a detailed tour of their Razorback hatchery. After the hatchery tour, we will picnic at Lake Mead with a box lunch provided by the Paris Hotel. Our afternoon continues at Hoover Dam where we will go on a dam tour and then have free time to explore the dam and the dam visitor center.

Price: $125.00 per Person (includes lunch & refreshments)

Arrive at USFWS Razorback Facility in 45 -60 minutes (10:00)

Tour Razorback facility for 60 minutes

Depart USFWS Razorback Facility (11:30)

Arrive Hoover Dam (12:45)

Tour Hoover Dam (1:15)

Allow 2 hours at Hoover dam for tour and solo exploration

2. Mandalay Bay Shark Reef Tour

Description:

A shuttle will pick you up at your designated time at the Paris Hotel and take you to Mandalay Bay. A curator will take you behind the scenes of this 1.6 million gallon aquarium with more than 2,000 animals. Our tour will include the filtration, food preparation, and the diving area. After the tour, you will have time to explore the aquarium on your own. Return shuttles are available at regular intervals. No children under the age of 13 are permitted on this tour.

Tour groups of 20 Depart every 30 minutes

Price: $75.00

CAA Board of Directors Meeting to be Held on December 14th

A CAA Board of Directors meeting will be held on December 14th, 2011, from 8:30 am to 5:00pm at Hubbs Sea World Research Institute.

A CAA Board of Directors meeting will be held on October 13th, 2011, from 9:30am to 5:00pm at The White House at Passmore Ranch. The meeting is open to all CAA members. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

The Passmore Ranch is located at 7766 Dillard Road, Sloughhouse, CA 95683 which is at the corner of Dillard Road and Meiss Road.

From Hwy 99, take the Dillard Road exit and proceed until you hit Meiss Road. At the corner – large gate, large White House.

From Hwy 50, take the Bradshaw exit and proceed south to Jackson Hwy (Hwy 16). Turn left and drive to Dillard Road stoplight. Turn right and proceed to Meiss Road. Large gate, large White House.

Press Release: Student Fish Farmers & Chefs highlight Aquaculture Day at the State Fair

Culinary students from Cosumnes Oaks High School (Elk Grove) and local professional chefs will be preparing farm-raised fish & shellfish throughout the afternoon this Saturday at The Farmʼs demonstration kitchen at Cal Expo. Fair-goers are invited to sample the tasty endproduct
of Californiaʼs fine variety of sustainably and locally grown seafood, including trout, sturgeon, tilapia, and abalone. Demoʼs scheduled for 1, 2, 4, & 5pm…

State Fair Preparations are Coming Together Well

In addition to the always popular exhibit of live fish & aquatic plants, we have a new feature:

Chefs will be demonstrating how to prepare product from CAA growers throughout the fair’s run, with a special spotlight on Sat, July 23rd (billed as Aquaculture Day at The Farm). Special guests from the Elk Grove school district’s Culinary Academy at Cosumnes Oaks High School will be front & center, with instructors Kerri Hock and Cristin Smith along with some of their young chef students. Also showcasing their talent with cultured product will be chefs Natalya from Cafe Americain (a champagne & caviar house in Old Sacramento), Krom Sharrief (from Caffe Culinaire) and Adam Pechal (from Tuli Bistro / Thir13en). We are still encouraging additional participants for open slots throughout the 3-wk run of the fair.

CAA would also like to encourage its Board and general Membership to attend the fair the afternoon of the 23rd (especially) and enjoy one of each year’s most popular exhibits.

CAA and the aquaculture industry will be well-represented again this year at the California State Fair. The association will sponsor a day of special events on Aquaculture Day at “The Farm” on Saturday, July 23. The day will include informational presentations, cooking demonstrations by leading chefs, and special opportunities to sample California’s seafood treats.

The “Fish Experience” is also bigger and better than ever! Enjoy your chance to get up close and personal with a variety of aquatic life raised by California producers as you pet giant sturgeon, meet catfish and bass, and even risk a close encounter with a turtle, a frog or a crayfish. In addition to seeing and touching these normally inaccessible friends, learn how aquaculture provides half of our seafood, how and where the fish are raised, and about pond and lake stocking for recreational fishing.

Don’t miss the “Fish Experience”, with two daily guided tours at 2:30 & 5:30 pm. Also, make plans to attend “Fish Day” on Saturday, July 23 for cooking demonstrations, samples and special presentations all day long. Exhibit and special activities located at “The Farm”.

Volunteers Needed for CAA Aquaculture Pavilion at the State Fair

CAA is seeking volunteers to help staff its Aquaculture Pavilion during this year’s California State Fair. The Fair runs from July 14-31, with volunteers needed each day. Volunteers spend part of the afternoon in the Pavilion, offering information about aquaculture and the fish on display to the public. In return they receive free admission to the Fair and a parking pass, along with ample time to enjoy the rest of the Fair.
