- May and June 2009 saw a number of news articles suggesting that farmed fish might pose a risk of mad cow disease. The articles, generally based on a small study, suggested that the use of bovine by-products in fish food introduced this hazard into the food chain. In fairness, the study held that many scientists regard the risk as very low because of the difficulty of transmitting across species. The Simple Truth - It can’t happen here! Feed producers in California and across most of the nation long-ago discontinued the use of bovine products in fish food. Farmed fish is actually far safer than wild-caught, in part because of the scientifically controlled diet the fish receive.
