OPC Seeking Environmental Scientist

Courtesy of OPC:

The California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) is hiring an Environmental Scientist to manage its Sustainable Fisheries Program. The OPC is a state entity that works to (1) coordinate activities among ocean-related state agencies to improve the effectiveness of state efforts to protect ocean resources, (2) establish policies to coordinate the collection and sharing of scientific data related to coastal and ocean resources between agencies, (3) identify and recommend changes in state and federal law and policy to the Governor and Legislature, and (4) allocate and execute delegated bond funds and other designated funds in a manner that is transparent and in line with OPC’s priorities.

This Environmental Scientist position is responsible for managing the Ocean Protection Council’s Sustainable Fisheries Program.  The Sustainable Fisheries Program seeks to promote healthy marine ecosystems and sustainable marine fisheries in order to protect California’s living coastal and ocean resources, and the communities and economic activities that rely upon them. California’s productive and diverse marine ecosystems face numerous threats, including pollution, habitat destruction, historical overfishing, bioaccumulation of toxins, and climate change. The Sustainable Fisheries Program builds upon the foundation laid by the Marine Life Management Act (MLMA) and partners with regulatory bodies charged with implementing these statues to help advance ocean ecosystem management, and works with partners including fisherman, tribal governments, scientists, and non- profit organizations to advance improved governance of California fisheries.

The Environmental Scientist should have a strong working knowledge of the MLMA, the MLPA, state managed fisheries, fishery management plans and state management processes. Additional knowledge of federal managed fisheries, the Pacific Fishery Management Council processes and the state’s role in it will be helpful. Scientific understanding of basic stock modeling/ stock assessment, population dynamics, harvest control rules, fishery management tools and experience working with fishing communities in California or elsewhere is highly desirable.
