Monterey >> Google chairman Eric Schmidt and his wife Wendy have committed $10 million to bolster the efforts of Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program.
Aquarium officials called the gift “transformative,” saying it would further their efforts to make fisheries and aquaculture more sustainable. The 15-year-old program, which began as an exhibit, has evolved into a leading voice on sustainable seafood that influences everyone from chefs to major buyers to top government officials.
“We have made remarkable progress in the last few years, changing perceptions and practices among business and the public,” Aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard said. “While we’ve seen tremendous progress in recovery of U.S. fisheries, so much more needs to be done globally to ensure food security and healthy oceans for the future.
“It’s gratifying to have our successes recognized by the Schmidts. With their support, we will now be able to accomplish so much more,” Packard added in a statement…
