Dr. Gene Kim Appointed as NIFA National Program Leader for Aquaculture

Dr. Gene Kim was recently appointed as National Program Leader for the Aquaculture program at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).  His work will include providing aquaculture leadership, expertise, and management for grant programs (e.g., Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, Small Business Innovation Research Program, Capacity Grants, Special Research Grants Program for Aquaculture Research), the Interagency Working Group on Aquaculture, and the Regional Aquaculture Centers.

His previous role was Program Director for Aquaculture in the National Sea Grant Office at NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) in Silver Spring, MD.  In that position, Gene directed NOAA’s extramural research grants program for aquaculture, represented Sea Grant to the NOAA Aquaculture Office and the Interagency Working Group on Aquaculture, orchestrated a national network of Sea Grant aquaculture extension agents and projects, contributed topical expertise for fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood issues, chaired a NOAA international aquaculture science bilateral, and provided programmatic oversight and review for four state Sea Grant Programs in the Gulf of Mexico.  Before that, his work experience includes the NOAA Research Office of Policy, Planning, and Evaluation (NOAA Ecosystem Research Program Coordinator), the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee’s Fisheries Wildlife, and Oceans Subcommittee (Knauss Legislative Fellow), and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (Peer Review Coordinator).

Dr. Kim was awarded a doctorate from the Ohio State University, where he focused on issues common to fisheries and aquaculture management (i.e., invasive species, water quality and sediments effects on fish growth and survival, dietary transfer of organic contaminants). His Master of Science in fisheries and aquaculture is from Auburn University and undergraduate studies at Miami University earned him a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy.
